The Surprising Research About Diets and Weight Loss
When we think of losing weight, we think of going on a diet. However, UCLA researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis of diet studies analyzing 31 long-term studies and found that people who dieted lost weight short term, but the majority of people gained all the weight back.
Traci Mann UCLA co-author of a comprehensive analysis of diet studies said, “Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people.” Mann and her team decided to look at long-term results of dieting and analyzed all the research following dieters two to five years.
What they found was shocking. Mann said, “We concluded most of them would have been better off not going on the diet at all. Their weight would be pretty much the same, and their bodies would not suffer the wear and tear from losing weight and gaining it all back.”
“Several studies indicate that dieting is actually a consistent predictor of future weight gain,” said Janet Tomiyama, a co-author of the study and UCLA graduate student. One study found that both men and women who participated in formal weight-loss programs gained significantly more weight over a two-year period than those who had not participated in a weight-loss program, she said.
