Myths of Hypnosis

When we think of hypnosis, we think of what we see on stage, where an entertainer calls people up to the stage and they go through all sorts of antics. We laugh as people eagerly eat onions thinking its an apple or cluck like chickens.

In the stage shows, they use confusion patterns to disorient the mind so that the person becomes open to suggestion from the hypnotist. We see people seemingly blank out or lose control. This is why in the stage shows, you’ll see the hypnotist call a bunch of people up to the stage, and the ones that go into to confusion and look to the hypnotist are the ones they keep on stage, the rest of them they send back to their seats.

Therapeutic hypnosis is not like stage show hypnosis.

In therapeutic hypnosis, we don’t want the mind to be confused, blank out or lose control. Rather than confusing the mind, we want the mind and body to relax and learn new patterns to make updates and changes.

In therapeutic hypnosis, there is no blanking out or losing control and you are aware and awake the whole time.

It may feel like your attention wanders in and out or may seem similar to when you were driving and missed a freeway exit, your mind was just doing something else.

Hypnosis may also feel similar to meditation. But sometimes meditation is hard for people because the mind likes to be busy. This is where hypnosis is even easier than meditation. Rather than having the mind blank out thought – we put it to work – we give it specific things to do to the automatic mind switch its focus.

Hypnosis feels deeply relaxing and where your mind goes, the body will follow.

Hypnotherapy is actually a way to speak with your automatic mind – or unconscious mind. Whatever your mind is running automatically in the background are the habits, patterns and programs that direct our habits, our choices and even the quality of our lives. If you want deep and lasting change, you must address the unconscious or automatic mind to make the change lasting and effective.

Hypnosis changes habits,  patterns and programs of the unconscious mind (whatever the mind is running automatically) quickly and effectively. We can also train the mind to focus your awareness and attention which affects memory, focus, health, and more.

And we can get the unconscious mind working for your conscious goals.

Have you ever experienced self-sabotage?

Sabotage is when you know what you need to do, but you just can’t make yourself do it. Its as if a part of me wants this and a part of me wants that. And then you find yourself caught between the two, even as if the angel is on one shoulder and the devil on the other.  By understanding how the mind works, we can take a closer look at understanding the brain and how to be in charge of your mind and focus.

The mind works like an iceberg.

Will hypnosis work for meThe top part of the iceberg that we see above water is like our conscious mind, this is our action – planning, goal – setting mind, Consciously we know what we want to create or the change we want to make.

Underneath the waterline is the layer just below the surface. This is like our subconscious mind, where our mind keeps information that is easy to retrieve, or that we view often or recently. This is like thinking of your phone number or address.

Then, below that is the unconscious mind, which is our deeper awareness that stores all our experiences. Think of your 5th birthday, what about your 10th birthday? Most of us don’t remember it because its so far in the past. This is how the brain works for efficiency, it lays our memories down one on top of the other, so that the easiest memories to access are the most recent and at the top of the pile.

But our past can affect how we see ourselves and how we do life. It can also account for brain’s automatic habits and filters.

One client of mine had been overweight most of his life. It didn’t seem to matter what he did, he couldn’t lose weight. Then, working with the tools of NLP and Hypnosis, he remembered an event, when he was 9 years old, he was bullied by a group of older kids. He thought, “if only I were bigger, they couldn’t pick on me.” This then started an unconscious program to grow bigger. He couldn’t grow taller, so he grew wider as a directive from the unconscious mind.

Hypnosis helps you align your automatic mind to be on track with your conscious goals. With this alignment, habit and pattern change happens so easily and naturally, it’s almost automatic!

Hypnosis updates your mental software to run a better version of you!

Hypnosis research

In 1970 Alfred A. Barrios, which led to the way in gaining mainstream acceptance of hypnosis as an extremely effective modality. Barrios compared 1,018 studies and articles on hypnosis, 899 articles on psychoanalytic therapy and 355 on behavioral therapy and he compared the overall lasting success rates of the different therapies.Hypnosis In Research Shows a Markedly Higher Success Rate Compared to Other Types of Therapy

His research on hypnosis found that the averages of success rates and the number of sessions were as follows:

  • Hypnotherapy had a massive 93% success rate after only 6 sessions.
  • Behavioral therapy success rates of 72% success after 22 sessions.
  • And Psychotherapy only warranted a 38% success rate after an average of 600 sessions.

This led Alfred Barrios to conclude that for changing habits, thought patterns, and actual behavior hypnosis was the most effective method, and it required less time / sessions than any other type of therapy.

Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP

NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the practical application of applied psychology. With NLP, you can quickly change negative habits and patterns by training the brain to create new habits quickly. Eliminate fears, anxieties, release the effects of past traumas, feel more confident, stay focused, find your motivation, and change the mental obstacles that get in the way, like “I’m not good enough,” or “I need to be perfect.” When your brain is wired into how you want to think and feel, you don’t have to struggle with the old patterns anymore.

NLP has been called “the user’s guide to the brain” giving you the tools to take charge of your habits, patterns, and even update old “programs” which may be operating against you. With these easy to use, practical tools, you’ll find yourself breaking free of old patterns – and moving your life forward like never before! see the map of the brain and NLP
