Often, we think weight loss we should be able to do on our own because we might know what is healthy and what we need to do – but its making ourselves follow through that’s the problem.

If you know what is healthy, but then find yourself craving the wrong foods, snacking at the wrong times, and taking two steps forward only to take two steps back – chances are, your mind may be set against you.

At the conscious level, we know that we want to lose weight, but if the deeper mind is running an unconscious program, its downright impossible to make a change. We might find ourselves really struggling, almost like a part of us wants to lose weight, and a part of us doesn’t.

Our deeper mind operates “unconscious” programs because what we’ve learned in the past. This can be as simple as having had to “Clean your Plate” repeatedly as a child, and then this overrides our natural “I’m full” awareness as an adult.

We can even have underlying reasons or “programs” operating against us. These programs are held in the unconscious mind.

One client’s story, we’ll call him Joe was overweight for most of his life. He really struggled to lose weight, but he could never stick with a program. Sometimes he was even motivated to exercise, but it would only last a week or two. Then working with the tools of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, he remembered that when he was 9, he was bullied by a group of older kids and he thought, “if only I were bigger, they couldn’t pick on me.” From this experience, his unconscious mind began to run a program to be bigger so he could stand up for himself. He couldn’t grow taller, so he grew wider. Once he cleared this unconscious program, then he was able to lose the weight. Weight is no longer an issue for him, he doesn’t have to count calories, he doesn’t have to watch what he eats, he easily maintains his healthy weight.

Here are a few of the programs my clients have found connected with the reasons for carrying extra weight. These reasons don’t often make sense to our conscious mind, but they may make sense to our deeper unconscious mind. Here are just a few examples of weight programs my clients have found:

  • I carry extra weight so that I don’t attract unwanted attention
  • I carry extra weight for protection and safety
  • I carry extra weight because I am resentful toward my partner.
  • I carry weight so people can’t push me around.
  • I carry extra weight so I won’t stand out.

Even though you may not consciously believe them, these beliefs can be the underlying unconscious reasons for gaining weight.
