Motivation can range from simple to more complicated.

At the simple level, we have associations and history attached to our experiences. It was week four that I was teaching a weight loss and healthy lifestyle class, the ladies filed in and took their seats and I started off the weekly check in with, “Ok, so what are you all doing for exercise?” Dead silence. Everyone was avoiding eye contact.

I continued, “Well, you know you need to be adding in some exercise.”

After another few moments of silence, one of the ladies blurted out – “If we liked to exercise we wouldn’t be here!”

Oh, I started to get it, so I asked, “What do you think and feel when you think of exercise.”

They all took turns, “Sweaty!” “Hard work!” “Painful!” “Yuck!”  Of course they weren’t motivated to exercise – who would be with those negative thoughts attached!

They had negative history attached to exercise. Our unconscious mind stores all our experiences in the grand archives of the mind. When we think of exercise, our unconscious mind sums up all the positive and all the negative experiences, and we get a feeling about it. This feeling is our motivation and it comes from our unconscious mind.

This class inspired my cd: Motivation for Fitness designed to give my students new things to THINK and FEEL about exercise, thus shifting our unconscious motivation. As you feed your mind the positive messages about fitness and movement, you’ll find yourself enjoying and looking forward to a great workout.

If you want to be more motivated – you need to feed your mind the POSITIVE messages!
